Do you believe it is possible for a man to live forever?
Perhaps you have heard of those that are making efforts
to extend life. Throughout history men have searched for
the "fountain of youth". Will the technology of our age
provide us with the secrets of immortality?
The Scripture tells us that Abraham lived in an arrid area
and dug many wells for water. Water was a valuable
resource. A dispute arose over his wells that was later
settled by an agreement and covenant. Abraham realized
there was only one God that could supply his "living water"
and gave God the honor for the peaceful settlement. "Then
Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba and worshiped
the Lord, the Everlasting God" (Genesis 21:33). The tamarisk
tree could survive in the harshest of conditions and would
always be a reminder for him that by God's methods, he would
always have a resource for water.
The Psalmist knew the brevity of life and the sovereignty of
God over space and time. He knew our existence and our end
depend on God: "Lord, you have always been our home. Before
you created the hills or brought the world into being, you
were eternally God, and will be God forever. You tell us to
return to what we were; you change us back to dust. A thousand
years to you are like one day; they are like yesterday, already
gone, like a short hour in the night (Psa 90:1-4).
The Scripture tells us that after death for believers in heaven
there is a tree of life that we will be able to eat of the fruit.
For the believer, our "fountain of youth" is a simple trust that
God will keep us. Isaiah the prophet said: "You, Lord, give
perfect peace to those who keep their purpose firm and put their
trust in You. Trust in the Lord forever; He will always protect
us" (Isa 26:3-4).
Let us remember the God that is our Everlasting God. God's
name is Jehová El Olam. He is the God of eternity that always
was and always will be. He is the God who has an eternal purpose
for us that exceeds what any mind may conceive. He understands
human frailty and the shortness of life. Lift your hands to Him
and Praise Him today for the fact that He is the God who is our
Everlasting God that will always be there for us!
